Agent Red and Crash Alchemy present a creative and fantastic experience – the 4th annual South by Southwest Street CRASH, recently named “Best Street Art of SXSW” by Kit O’Connell

What is a CRASH? It’s an improvised, surprise flash mob-style performance with very real people seeming more and more surreal until characters stories explode into performance.
The whole event depends on YOU creating your own character and story OR choosing to participate in the main storyline below.

This year, Crash Alchemy is moving into new fantastic territory with incredible new members, and created a Robo-dance just for the CRASH. And this is just the beginning.
Plus, this year, we collaborated with Yago De Quay in interactive sound technology.

The story:
Sometimes we look back on our life and wonder “where did that time go while I was running through the automatic motions of my life?”
This year, we addressed one of the elements of madness in our culture: the need to organize, produce, develop, or consume, compulsions, automatic behavior and reactions, circular thinking and the the paralysis of a robot who wants to be human.

This year was bigger and better than ever before thanks to the facilitation of Clever Maven.

I was invited to direct Peugeot’s show at South America’s largest automobile trade show in São Paulo, Brazil in the fall of 2012. The show, with music composed by Yago de Quay, featured several components:

1) Four performers playing the car as a percussive instrument, with four microphones placed on different parts of the car;
2) Interactive dance, as de Quay played electronic instruments through a Kinect camera placed onstage;
3) Dance Battle showcasing performers’ best urban dance moves; and
4) choreographed dance by Laura Ferro of eight performers accompanied by de Quay’s singing and beatboxing.

After reading a magical book, our heroine travels to a fantastical world where she meets the hero. Initially clumsy and brute, he becomes tender and loving after they dance together. In the end she decides to dismiss illusionary hero and return to reality.

The dancers are the instruments. The piece uses contact microfones placed on the body of the dancers that respond to touch with visuals and sounds to touch. Depending on where they touch each other, a specific sound like a bass, or chord is played.

Car Percussion

Car Percussion: 4 contact microfones are placed on the hood, front door, back door and ceiling of the car so 4 percussionists can literally use the car as a percussive instrument.

Interactive Dance

Interactive Dance: A special camera called Kinect follows the movements of a dancer and responds with sound effects. Instead of dancing to music, you make music by dancing.

Urban Dance – Tsunami All Star

Urban Dance: 8 dancers (team Tsunami All Star) perform various styles street, break, parkour, animation, etc… While one vocalist does beatboxing and sings.

Achiles Live Painting

Live Art: The artist Achiles uses a tablet to draw, in real time, pictures of cars on a massive LED screen.

Behind the scenes is Jacarandá Áudio (www.jacarandatrilhas.com) taking technical care of the sound.
